Going Off-Grid in Tasmania — What You Need to Know

The idea of complete energy independence is appealing, and Tasmania’s rural properties sometimes make off-grid solar a practical necessity rather than a lifestyle choice. But going off-grid requires careful planning and a significantly larger investment than a standard grid-connected system.

An off-grid system must be capable of meeting 100% of your energy needs year-round, including during Tasmania’s darker winter months. This typically means a larger solar array (often 10 kW or more), a substantial battery bank (30 kWh to 60+ kWh depending on consumption), and a backup generator for extended periods of poor weather.

The system must also be designed to handle peak loads — the maximum amount of power your household draws at any one time. Running a kettle, oven, and heat pump simultaneously can create significant demand spikes that your inverter and battery must accommodate.

Off-grid systems require more maintenance and monitoring than grid-connected systems. Battery health, charge cycles, and generator servicing all need regular attention.

The cost of an off-grid system is typically two to four times that of an equivalent grid-connected system, owing to the larger array, battery storage, and backup generation required.

For properties where grid connection is unavailable or prohibitively expensive to establish, off-grid solar can be the most cost-effective long-term solution. For properties already connected to the grid, a hybrid system with battery backup often provides a better balance of independence and economics.
