How Long Do Solar Panels Last in Tasmania's Climate? — A 2026 Guide
Modern solar panels are built tough and typically last for 25 to 30 years or even longer. While the panels themselves can continue generating power for decades, their output slowly decreases over time. Most quality manufacturers provide a performance warranty guaranteeing the panels will still produce at least 80-85% of their original rated power after 25 years.
Tasmania’s climate is actually very favourable for solar panel longevity. Unlike hotter parts of mainland Australia, our milder temperatures help preserve the panels’ efficiency and lifespan. Extreme heat is a bigger enemy to solar panels than cold, so our cool, temperate conditions mean less heat-related degradation over the years. While we get our share of wind, rain, and frost, modern solar panels are engineered to withstand these elements easily.
How do solar panel warranties work?
Solar panel warranties give you two main types of protection: a product warranty and a performance warranty. It’s important to understand the difference, as they cover separate things and often last for different lengths of time.
- Product Warranty: This is like the warranty on your toaster or TV. It covers defects in materials and workmanship. If the panel fails because of a manufacturing fault—like a faulty connection or a problem with the frame—this warranty covers its repair or replacement. For good quality panels, this is typically between 15 and 25 years.
- Performance Warranty: This guarantees the panel’s electricity production over time. It acknowledges that all panels degrade slightly each year, but it warrants that they won’t degrade too quickly. A typical performance warranty might guarantee the panel will still operate at 90% of its rated output after 10 years and around 80-85% after 25 years.
The inverter, which converts the DC power from your panels into AC power for your home, has its own separate warranty, usually 5 to 10 years. You can often purchase an extended warranty for the inverter.
What size solar system is right for a Tasmanian home in 2026?
For most Tasmanian households looking to future-proof their home, a system with around 13kW of panels paired with a 10kW inverter is becoming the new standard. This is a significant step up from the 6.6kW systems that were common in the past, and it’s designed to meet your growing energy needs as you electrify your home.
Why so big? The future is electric. Think about adding an electric vehicle (EV), a hot water heat pump, or an induction cooktop down the track. These additions will increase your electricity consumption, and a larger solar system ensures you can generate your own power to cover it. TasNetworks, our grid operator, allows a 10kW inverter on a standard single-phase connection, which most Tassie homes have, making this a straightforward and powerful setup.
Of course, not everyone needs a system this large. If you have a smaller household with very low electricity usage and no plans to electrify, a smaller system might be more suitable. The key is to match the system size to your expected future consumption.
How do I save money with solar in Tasmania?
In Tasmania, the biggest savings from solar come from using the power yourself as it’s being generated—this is called ‘self-consumption’. This is because the price you pay to buy electricity from the grid is much higher than the price you get for selling your excess solar power back to it.
Think of it this way:
- Buying Power: When you buy electricity from a retailer like Aurora Energy, you might pay around 28-30 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
- Selling Power: When you export your unused solar power, the regulated feed-in tariff you receive is about 9.276 cents per kWh (from 1 July 2026).
This price gap means that for every kWh of solar power you use yourself, you’re saving the full 28-30 cents you would have otherwise paid. But for every kWh you sell to the grid, you only earn about 9 cents. The financial logic is clear: shift your energy usage to the daytime to maximise your savings. Run your dishwasher, washing machine, and hot water heat pump when the sun is shining.
The federal government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) can also reduce the upfront cost of your system through a rebate. Tasmania is in STC Zone 4, which determines the level of this discount. A reputable installer will handle this for you and include it in your final quote.
Is a battery worth it in Tasmania?
A solar battery can be a great addition, but it’s important to be realistic about the payback period in Tasmania. While a solar panel system might pay for itself in roughly 4-6 years, adding a battery can extend that to around 7-12 years. This is because Tasmania’s electricity prices are relatively low compared to the mainland, and our feed-in tariff is fair, which slightly reduces the financial urgency for a battery.

For those on wholesale spot-price plans, a battery can be automated to charge when grid prices are very low or even negative, and discharge to power your home when prices are high, creating more advanced savings.
How can I make my solar panels last longer?
Your solar system is a long-term investment, and a little bit of care can ensure it performs well for decades. The good news is that solar panels are very low-maintenance, especially in Tasmania where regular rainfall helps keep them clean.
Here are a few simple tips:
- Choose Quality Components: The best way to ensure longevity is to start with high-quality panels and inverters from reputable manufacturers with strong warranties.
- Professional Installation: A professional, accredited installer will ensure the panels are mounted securely and wired correctly, preventing physical stress and electrical issues.
- Keep Them Clean: While rain does most of the work, it’s a good idea to check your panels annually. If they’re particularly dirty from dust, pollen, or bird droppings, a gentle clean with a soft brush and water can restore their performance. Never use harsh chemicals or high-pressure hoses.
