How Tasmania's Seasons Affect Your Solar Production
Tasmania’s distinct seasons have a noticeable impact on solar energy production. Understanding these seasonal variations helps set realistic expectations and plan your energy usage accordingly.
During summer (December to February), Tasmania enjoys long daylight hours — up to 15 hours of daylight in late December. Solar production peaks during this period, and a well-sized system will typically generate far more electricity than a household can use during the day. This is when exports to the grid are highest and when battery storage adds the most value.
Autumn (March to May) sees a gradual decline in production as days shorten and the sun sits lower in the sky. Production remains reasonable through March and into April but drops more noticeably in May.
Winter (June to August) is the most challenging period for solar in Tasmania. Daylight hours drop to around 9 hours, and cloudy conditions are more frequent. A system that generates 30 kWh on a summer day might produce only 8–12 kWh on a winter day. This is when grid reliance is highest.
Spring (September to November) brings a welcome rebound. Production increases steadily, and by November, output is approaching summer levels.
The key takeaway is to size your system for annual performance rather than fixating on winter output. The surplus generated in the warmer months helps balance the shortfall in winter, particularly if you’re on a plan that allows bill credits to roll over.
