Maintaining Your Solar System in Tasmania

Maintaining Your Solar System in Tasmania

Solar systems are relatively low maintenance, but they are not entirely maintenance-free. A little attention goes a long way toward ensuring your system performs optimally over its 25+ year lifespan.

Panel Cleaning. Tasmania’s rainfall does a reasonable job of keeping panels clean, but pollen, bird droppings, lichen, and dust can accumulate, particularly in drier months or near trees. An annual clean — or more frequently if you notice buildup — can help maintain peak performance. Use water and a soft brush; avoid abrasive cleaners or high-pressure washers.

Monitoring. Most modern inverters come with monitoring apps that let you track daily production. Check your system’s output regularly. A sudden or gradual drop in production can indicate a fault, shading issue, or panel degradation. Early detection saves money.

Inverter Health. Inverters are typically the first component to require attention or replacement. String inverters generally last 10 to 15 years, while microinverters often carry 25-year warranties. If your inverter displays error codes or your production drops unexpectedly, have it inspected.

Electrical Inspection. It’s advisable to have a qualified electrician inspect your solar system every few years. They’ll check wiring, connections, switchboard components, and ensure everything meets current safety standards.

Vegetation Management. Trees grow. A panel array that was shade-free at installation may develop shading issues years later as surrounding vegetation matures. Periodic trimming can protect your investment.
