After the system has paid for itself, the energy it generates is effectively free for the remaining 20-25 year lifespan of the panels. For a home battery, the payback period is longer, generally between 7 and 12 years, even with the federal discount factored in.

These timeframes are estimates and can change based on how much electricity you use, when you use it, the final cost of your system, and future electricity price changes.
