Roof Orientation and Panel Placement in Tasmania

In the Southern Hemisphere, north-facing roof sections receive the most direct sunlight throughout the year. For Tasmanian homes, a north-facing roof with a pitch of around 30 to 35 degrees is considered ideal for maximising annual solar production.

However, the ideal orientation isn’t always available. The good news is that modern solar panels are efficient enough that east and west-facing installations still perform well. A west-facing array can be particularly useful if your household’s peak consumption falls in the afternoon and evening.

East-facing panels will generate more in the morning, which can be beneficial for homes where occupants are active early in the day. Some installations split panels across east and west-facing roof sections to spread generation across a wider portion of the day.

South-facing roofs in Tasmania are generally avoided, as they receive significantly less direct sunlight. However, even south-facing panels can produce some power, particularly in summer when the sun’s arc is wider.

Shading is another critical factor. Even partial shading from trees, chimneys, or neighbouring buildings can significantly reduce output. Technologies like microinverters and DC optimisers can help mitigate shading impacts by allowing each panel to operate independently.

A thorough site assessment is essential before installation to ensure optimal placement.
