Understanding Tasmania's Solar Feed-in Tariff

When your solar panels produce more electricity than your home is using, the excess is exported back to the grid. In Tasmania, you receive a payment for this exported energy known as the feed-in tariff (FiT).

The Tasmanian Government regulates feed-in tariff rates, which are reviewed periodically by the Tasmanian Economic Regulator. The rate you receive depends on your retailer and the current regulatory period. It is important to check the current rate, as it can change from year to year.

While the feed-in tariff provides some return, the real value of solar comes from self-consumption — using the power your panels generate rather than exporting it. Every kilowatt-hour you use directly from your panels is a kilowatt-hour you don’t have to buy from Aurora Energy at the full retail rate.

This is why system sizing and understanding your household consumption patterns matter. A system that is too large for your daytime usage will export heavily, earning the lower feed-in rate rather than saving at the higher retail rate.

Strategies to increase self-consumption include running dishwashers, washing machines, and hot water systems during the day when your panels are producing, or investing in a battery storage system.
